INS Vindhyagiri - 10 Things to Know About This Advanced Warship


On the 17th of August 2023, Ms Droupadi Murmu, the President of India, launched INS Vindhyagiri at GRSE (Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited) in Kolkata as per the official statement of the Indian Navy. And the official Twitter account of the Rashtrapati Bhavan made it public yesterday. In the tweet, it wrote, “President Droupadi Murmu graced the launch ceremony of Vindhyagiri – the sixth ship of project 17A of the Indian Navy at Kolkata. The President said that the launch of Vindhyagiri marks a move forward in enhancing India’s maritime capabilities. It is also a step towards achieving the goal of Atmanirbhar Bharat through indigenous shipbuilding”.      



In addition to this, the President launched My Bengal Addiction Free Bengal campaign under Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan. This campaign is organized by Brahma Kumaris at Raj Bhavan in Kolkata. Here are the 10 things you should know about this technologically advanced project 17 A Frigate:

  1. As per PTI reports, INS Vindhyagiri is the 6th warship of the project 17 A program. The name of this warship, Vindhyagiri, has a close association with a mountain range in Karnataka, the Indian Southern state.
  2. As a follow-on of the Project 17 Class Frigates, mainly Shivalik Class, these warships have sophisticated sensors, weapons, enhanced features, and platform management systems.
  3. In comparison with its predecessor, Vindhyagiri is a highly technologically advanced Frigate and beneficial in terms of its service.
  4. According to PTI reports, the old Vindhyagiri that was in service for 31 years till June 2012 had exercises in various countries and faced several challenges in its operations.
  5. The newly launched Vindhyagiri is a symbol of our country’s determination to embrace its naval heritage while moving ahead for its future in defense capabilities.
  6. Mazagon Dock Limited with GRSE is constructing four warships under the Project 17A program. These companies launched the first five ships between 2019 and 2022.
  7. The Indian Navy’s Warship design Bureau, a prestigious for warship design activities, has designed the Project 17A ships. The Indian Navy has made it public through PTI.
  8. The Indian Navy representative said that around 75% of orders for equipment and systems of this project are given to prominent firms that included small and medium enterprises.
  9. The recent launch of INS Vindhyagiri is a clear sign of the remarkable progress India has made in the buildup of a self-reliant naval force.
  10. The warship is 149 meters long. It can displace or carry war materials of 6 670 tonnes. In addition, it has formidable guided missile frigates and features a top speed of 28 knots.
