Charanjit Singh Channi

DOB: 1 March 1963
A lawyer, management graduate, and a life-long student, Charanjit Singh Channi was born on March 1, 1963, in the Makrona village near Chamkaur Sahib. He is an active member of the Indian National Congress party and currently serves as the Chief Minister of the Punjab State Legislative Assembly. He has succeeded Capt. Amarinder Singh.   

Charanjit's Early Life And Educational Career

Channi was born in the village of Makrauna Kalan, Punjab. He pursued his law degree from the Panjab University, followed by an MBA from PTU Jalandhar. Currently, Charanjit Singh is pursuing a PhD degree under professor Emanual Nahar's guidance from Panjab University, Chandigarh. The subject of his PhD is the Indian National Congress party.   Charanjit Singh Channi belongs to the Dalit community of the Sikh religion. He is married to Dr Kamaljit Kaur, who is a Senior Medical Officer. He is the father of Navjit Singh Channi (PEC University graduate) and Rhythmjit Singh Channi.    In addition to his engagement in active politics, Channi is a good dancer and a handball player. He represented PU thrice in the state-level championships. Due to his engagement in multiple activities, he is also known as a 'man of many parts.'  

Channi's Career In Active Politics

Charanjit Singh Channi started his career in politics while pursuing his matriculation from Khalsa Senior Secondary School, Kharar. He was elected as the President of the Student's union during that time. In that election, he got 472 votes out of 1,000 votes. He continued with his political journey during his college days too. During his graduation days at Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Chandigarh, he was elected as the General Secretary of the Student's union.   In 2007, Channi rebelled against the Congress party due to the allotment of election tickets to Chamkaur Sahib. He fought in that year's assembly election as an independent candidate and later joined the Shiromani Akali Dal.    After three years, in December 2010, Capt. Amarinder Singh paved the way for his return to the Congress party. Since then, he has been an active member of the Indian National Congress.   Before becoming the CM of Punjab Government, he was the Minister of Technical Education and Industrial Training in the Punjab Government.
