Diabetes: Symptoms, Causes, Ayurveda Treatment and Prevention

Diabetes is a widespread health condition that impacts the blood sugar levels and insulin in a person’s body. In this condition, either the pancreas is rendered inefficient to produce adequate insulin, or the body becomes unresponsive to insulin and thus cannot use it efficiently.

Diabetes is not a curable disease. But it can be effectively dealt with with the help of a healthy diet and an exercise plan. Ayurveda, an ancient Indian branch of medicine, also gives many herbal remedies for its management.

Ayurvedic medicine for diabetes is composed of a lot of herbs like cinnamon, turmeric, Indian gooseberry. When the medicine is taken along with a healthy diet and regular exercise, it helps bring down blood sugar levels.

Types of Diabetes

Broadly, diabetes can be classified into type 1 and type 2 diabetes. In type 1 diabetes, the immune system starts to attack and kill pancreatic cells, which make insulin. The body does not produce insulin in this condition.

Type 2 diabetes is characterized by insulin resistance in the body. It leads to the build-up of a high level of sugar in the blood. The body stops responding to insulin and cannot produce adequate levels of this hormone. It is not an auto-immune condition, unlike type 1 diabetes.

What are the Symptoms of Diabetes?

Some general symptoms of this illness are listed below.

  • High levels of thirst.
  • Increased level of hunger.
  • Frequent urination.
  • Weight loss.
  • A feeling of extreme exhaustion.
  • Blurry vision.
  • Sores that take a long time to heal.

Men who have this condition commonly experience a reduced sex drive, a lack of muscle strength, and erectile dysfunction. Women with diabetes will experience yeast infections, itchy and dry skin, and urinary tract infections.

Causes of Diabetes

In type 1 diabetes, the immune system strikes the insulin-generating beta cells in the pancreas. It makes the body unable to generate insulin.

Type 2 diabetes is mainly caused by an inactive lifestyle that causes excess weight gain. The body in this condition cannot properly use the insulin that the pancreas produces. Hence, glucose accumulates in the blood. However, researchers are yet to determine the exact cause of it.

Treatment of Diabetes

For type 1 diabetes, insulin is the primary treatment line. Four kinds of insulin are injected by the patient into their body. They are:

  • Rapid-acting insulin that begins working in 15 minutes.
  • Short-acting insulin that begins working in 30 minutes.
  • Intermediate-acting insulin that begins working within an hour or two.
  • Long-acting insulin that starts working in a few hours.

For managing type 2 diabetes, apart from drugs, a healthy diet and regular exercise play a crucial role. With only a few healthy lifestyle changes, the patient can significantly lower their blood sugar levels.

When you couple your prescription drugs with ayurvedic medicine for diabetes, you can find a rapid improvement in your blood sugar levels. Moreover, ayurvedic medicines do not cause any undesirable side effects. They are entirely safe and natural.

Diabetes Prevention

If you are prediabetic, you can prevent yourself from being diagnosed with this condition by taking the following measures:

  • Aim to engage in 150 minutes of aerobic exercise every week.
  • Eliminate trans and saturated fats like oil and processed foods from your diet.
  • Consume more vegetables, whole grains, and fruits.
  • If you are overweight, aim to lose around 7% of your weight.

Although there is no straight line of treatment for diabetes, this condition is manageable to a great extent. It is important to instill healthy lifestyle habits in yourself to alleviate and prevent the disease.
