Premature Grey Hair In Men: How Serious Is The problem?

Your world can come down crashing if you just spot a single strand of grey hair in your 20s! The alarm starts ringing, and you start thinking how quickly you are getting old but what causes the premature grey hair? Can you ever reverse the process? How serious is the problem? Well, keep on reading as we decode the ABCs of premature grey hair.

Causes of Grey Hair

Hair follicles produce a pigment called melanin which is responsible for the pigment of your hair. As you start ageing, the follicles start making less melanin, and this causes grey hair. The process often begins when you are in your 30s, but due to many reasons, the stage can come much early. Causes of Premature Grey Hair

Genetics

If you notice grey hair at a very young age, the chances are that your parents or grandparents also had greying at an early stage of their life. Genetics can be the cause of premature grey hair.

Stress

Stress will not directly make your hair turn grey, but anxiety problems have a lot to do with your hair issues. If you are someone who faces sleep problems, appetite problems and high blood pressure, you can face the problem of premature grey hair. Many researchers have found a direct link between stress and depletion of stem cells in the hair follicles of mice. So stress might be the culprit behind your grey hair!

Smoking

Studies have found a direct connection between the onset of grey hair and cigarette smoking; the toxins present in cigarettes not only increases the risk of cancer but can damage parts of your body, including your hair follicles, causing your hair to turn grey.

Thyroid Disorder

Thyroid problems such as hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism cause hormonal changes, which can be responsible for premature grey hair. The thyroid gland is located at the base of your neck and helps in controlling your metabolism. An overactive or underactive thyroid can cause your hair follicles to produce less melanin and hence, influence the colour of your hair.

Can You Reverse Grey Hair?

The reverse depends on the cause. If you are experiencing the problem of premature grey hair, the reason can be a thyroid disorder or deficiency of vitamin B12. Hence it is advisable to get yourself tested at the doctor. However, if the cause is genetic, there's nothing you can do to prevent it. If the reason is excessive smoking or stress, there is no evidence that proves the return of pigmentation after one quits smoking or reduces stress.
