It is one of the oldest Hindu temples in India. Somnath is a mix of two words Som and Nath, Som means Moon God, and Nath means protector. Somnath refers to the protector of the Moon God. According to Hindu mythology, when the father-in-law of Moon God cursed him to lose his luster, Lord Shiva cured his illness. And then the Moon God built this temple in order to honor Lord Shiva and named it Somnath. It is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of India.
