Mayawati

DOB: 15 January 1956
Indian politician and social reformer Mayawati was born on January 15, 1956, at Shrimati Sucheta Kriplani Hospital, New Delhi. She belongs to a Dalit family of the Jatav caste. Her father, Prabhu Das, was an employee at the Badalpur post office of Gautam Buddha Nagar. 

Mayawati’s Educational Background 

Due to the significant level of discrimination, she faced many barriers to her education. Facing all these hurdles, she somehow managed to finish her schooling, and in 1975 she joined Kalindi college of University of Delhi to pursue her B.A. In the year 1976, Mayawati earned B.Ed. degree from Meerut University’s VMLG college, Ghaziabad. Later in 1983, she obtained her LL.B. degree from the prestigious Faculty of Law College, University of Delhi.  

Mayawati’s Early Life And Political Career

Before entering into politics, she worked as a school teacher in a small school in Inderpuri, JJ Colony, Delhi. Along with working as a teacher, she was preparing for the Indian Administrative Services exams. In 1977, the Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and Other Backward Castes community leader Kanshi Ram visited her family home. During that visit, Kanshi Ram got impressed by Mayawati’s speaking skills and ideas for the betterment of disadvantaged groups and minority communities.  Due to her extraordinary personality, Mayawati was awarded the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) membership in 1984. In the same year, she contested the Lok Sabha election from the Kairana seat of Muzzafarnagar district. She lost that year’s election and again competed in 1985 from Bijnor and in 1987 from Haridwar.   

Mayawati’s First Political Victory

She got her first victory in 1989, where she won from the Bijnor Lok Sabha constituency seat. Although, the BSP did not win a clear majority in that election, the electoral role assisted Mayawati to gain considerable political experience. Later, in 1994 she was elected to the Rajya Sabha.  In 1995, Mayawati became the chief Minister of UP, as head of the Bahujan Samaj Party. Following this, she became the youngest Chief Minister of the Uttar Pradesh state Assembly during that time. Also, Mayawati holds the title of being the first female Dalit Chief Minister in the Democratic Republic of India.  After the break-up of the coalition government in the year 1995, the Assembly was dissolved. Following this dissolution, she became the Chief minister in 1997 and 2002 again in a coalition with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). She became the Chief Minister of UP for a full term in 2007 when her party won a clear majority. In 1996, she won two seats in the Lok Sabha elections and prioritized serving the Harora Lok Sabha Constituency. In 2001, Kanshi Ram named Mayawati as the successor to the Bahujan Samaj Party’s top leadership.

The priority focus of the BSP is to improve the situation of SCs, STs and other disadvantaged groups through reforming policies that will work for the betterment of these underprivileged groups.
