A Step Towards Self-Reliance: INS Vikrant, First Made In India Aircraft Carrier Commissioned!

On Friday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned the first-ever indigenous aircraft carrier INS Vikrant at the Cochin Shipyard Limited in Kochi. It is a significant step toward the central government's idea of self-reliance in the Indian defence sector. While commissioning India's largest aircraft carrier, PM Modi termed the event a tribute to India's rising spirits on the world horizon. "Today, here on the coast of Kerala, every Indian is witnessing the sunrise of a new future. This event held on INS Vikrant is a tribute to India's rising spirits on the world horizon. Vikrant is huge and special. Vikrant is not just a warship. This is a testimony to the hard work, talent, influence and commitment of 21st century India," INS Vikrant, India's home-built aircraft carrier, is a 45,000-tonne warship built at the cost of ₹ 20,000 crores. After completing almost a year of sea trials, the Made in India aircraft carrier was formally commissioned today. INS Vikrant is 262 metres long and 62 metres wide. It can have 30 aircraft on board, including MiG-29K, helicopters and fighter jets. The aircraft carrier can accommodate a crew of around 1,600. INS Vikrant has been named after its predecessor, which played a vital role in the India-Pakistan 1971 war. With INS Vikrant, India has officially joined a select group of nations, including Russia, the UK, the US, France and China, that can design and build their own aircraft carriers. Currently, India only has 1 aircraft carrier - INS Vikramaditya, which is built on a Russian platform. With the formal commission of INS Vikrant, the Indian Navy can now deploy an aircraft carrier on both its eastern and western fronts, thereby expanding its maritime presence. https://twitter.com/DDNewslive/status/1565578500551380992 https://twitter.com/narendramodi/status/1565559450043174912
