Swedish Scientist Svante Paabo Wins Nobel Prize in Medicine For His Astonishing Discovery on Human Evolution

Swedish Scientist Svante Paabo, son of 1982 Nobel Prize winner in medicine Sune Bergstrom, won the 2022 Nobel Prize in medicine for his astonishing discovery on human evolution. The Swedish scientist's discovery proved that modern humans share DNA with extinct relatives Denisovans and Neanderthals. His important discovery also provided insights into our immune system and what makes us different from our cousins. The Nobel Committee, while announcing the Award, said that Svante Paabo's sensational discovery hugely contributed to human evolution and also led to the revelation of a previously unknown hominin, Denisova. "Paabo and his team also surprisingly found that gene flow had occurred from Neanderthals to Homo sapiens, demonstrating that they had children together during periods of co-existence," said Anna Wedell, chair of the Nobel Committee. Svante Paabo was born in 1955 in Stockholm, Sweden and currently serves as the Director of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. The Nobel Prize announcements kicked off on Monday.
