‘Be Prepared For Any Eventuality’ AIIMS Chief Amid Omicron Threat
In the wake of rising cases of Omicron variant in the United Kingdom, AIIMS Chief Dr Randeep Guleria said that India should prepare itself for any eventuality and advised people to stay prepared than to get caught off-guard. On Sunday, Dr Guleria said: “We should prepare and hope that things are not as bad as in the United Kingdom. We need more data on Omicron. Whenever there is a surge in cases in other parts of the world, we need to monitor it closely and be prepared for any eventuality,” So far, India has recorded over 100 cases of the Omicron variant. Classified as the Variant of Concern by the World Health Organisation, the Omicron variant was first detected in South Africa on 25th November 2021 and WHO named the new covid-19 variant ‘B.1.1.529’ as Omicron. Most of the Omicron cases reported in India so far are asymptomatic, and scientists are working on genome sequencing to collect more data on the Omicron variant.
Covid-Bulletin: India Records 6,563 New Covid-19 Cases; Recovery Rate At 98.39%
According to the latest data released by the union health ministry, India has recorded 6,563 new covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. The active caseload of the country currently stands at 82,267, which is the lowest in 572 days. Meanwhile, daily recoveries continue to outnumber new covid-19 cases, with recording 8,077 recoveries in the previous 24 hours. The total recoveries in India stand at 3,41,87,017. The daily and weekly positivity rate stands at 0.75% and 0.60%, respectively. As per the Indian Council of Medical Research, the country has conducted 66.51 crore covid-19 tests so far. On the vaccination front, India has administered 137.67 crore covid-19 vaccine doses so far under the nationwide vaccination drive.

Central Government To Celebrate Good Governance Week From 20th to 26th December
As per the Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievance (DARPG), the union government will be celebrating the good governance week from 20th December to 26th December 2021. Various events have been planned by DARPG in collaboration with the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), Department of Pension and Pensioners’ Welfare, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade, Ministry of External Affairs and Ministry of Panchayati Raj and Rural Development. During the good governance week, the government will be launching the nationwide campaign titled ‘Prashasan Gaon Ki Aur’ for redressal of public grievances and improving service delivery. Good governance week will be in accordance with Azadi Ka Amrut Mahotsav celebrations to commemorate 75 years of progressive India.
Sri Lankan Government Arrests 55 Indian Fishermen For Illegal Fishing In The Country’s Territorial Waters
On 19th December, the Sri Lankan government arrested 55 Indian fishermen and seized 8 Indian fishing vessels on the charge of poaching. Confirming the same, the Sri Lankan government said that a fast attack craft of the 4th Fast Attack Craft Flotilla attached to the Northern Naval Command arrested 43 fishermen and took hold of 6 trawlers. The fishermen were hailing from Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu to the southeast of the Delft Island (Neduntheevu), Jaffna. However, it is still unclear if the fishermen would be arrested or released with a warning. Reacting to the news, Jesu Raja, a fishermen leader, said: “The fishermen had not violated the maritime boundary as claimed by Sri Lanka. It had become routine for the Sri Lankan Navy to blame the Indian fishermen for trespass and arrest them by using force” “The Union and State governments should immediately intervene and protect all the fishermen and bring back the trawlers. Until then, the fishermen will not venture into the sea,” added Jesu Raja.
