Rajasthan: Marriage Amendment Bill 2021 Sparks Huge Uproar In The State

After the Marriage Amendment Bill 2021 was passed in the assembly last week, the bill sparked a massive uproar in the state by NGOs and social groups who are working against child marriage and vouching for women's rights. The bill has trapped the Ashok Gehlot-led government in Rajasthan in a huge controversy because the bill mentions that all marriages, including minors, should be registered with the government. The bill says that in the case of minors, their parents or guardians should register the marriages. Now the question arrives, is the Rajasthan government giving backdoor legitimacy to child marriages through the Marriage Amendment Bill 2021? The Rajasthan government has, in its defence, said that it is following a Top Court directive that says that all marriages should be registered with the state government and securing the rights of children born out of child marriages and child widows. Kriti Bhati, a social activist who has herself stopped 1,500 child marriages, said: "Women are considered like property, and men have a right over their women in our society. By allowing the registration of child marriages, you are further putting a stamp on it. You are also endorsing sexual offences with minors, teenage pregnancy and a host of other problems," The 2015-2016 survey of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS) shows that the rate of child marriages in Rajasthan has come down from 65% to 35%. However, some activists say that the percentage is less because child marriages don't come under the government radar.  https://youtu.be/mxwIOXBI2QA
