Odisha: The Only State In India To Have All Three Species Of Crocodiles
Odisha has become the only state to have all three species of crocodiles – freshwater Gharials at Satakosiya in Mahanadi, saltwater crocodiles and muggers in Bhitar Kanika National park. The state of Odisha has always been a natural nest of Gharials, a critically endangered species. Though all the original Gharials introduced over the years in the state are dead now, around 28 hatchlings were spotted in the Baladamara area near the Satkosia range. Officials have been monitoring the development closely with round-the-clock surveillance. As per the wildlife warden of Anugul district, Prashanna Behera, the habitats of Gharials are in danger due to fishing and encroachment. Gharials are protected and listed in Schedule 1 of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
