Headlines: Omicron Variant Spreading At A Rapid Rate Says WHO

Omicron Variant Spreading At A Rapid Rate Says WHO

On Tuesday, World Health Organisation chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, while addressing a press conference, said: "The reality is that Omicron is probably in most countries, even if it hasn't been detected yet. Omicron is spreading at a rate we have not seen with any previous covid-19 variant," The new variant Omicron was detected in South Africa last month, and since then, Omicron cases have already been detected in 77 countries till now. Since the new variant is spreading at an unprecedented rate, WHO Chief asked countries to act swiftly in transmission and protect their health system from the heavily-mutated variant. Though the findings related to Omicron is very limited, WHO Expert Bruce Aylward warned countries to jump into a conclusion that the variant has mild symptoms or is less deadly. Mr Aylward said: "If we into a season like we're going into now when a lot of people want to get together for the holiday season, and we have a more transmissible virus that we don't actually know is milder, we could be setting ourselves up for a very dangerous situation," Speaking about vaccine hoarding culture, WHO experts said that there is not enough data to show that we need booster vaccine shots. However, they also pointed out that such hoarding can deepen inequity in vaccine access between wealthy and poor countries. https://youtu.be/MdUfQUkO2T0
