On Wednesday, China reported more than 20,000 cases which is the highest daily tally since the start of the covid-19 pandemic. China’s largest city, Shanghai, accounts for more than 80% of the national tally of the country. For the unversed, China is the country where the coronavirus is said to be originated as the country recorded the first-ever covid-19 case back in 2019.

Sri Lanka Economic Crisis: President Rajapaksa Revokes State of Emergency

Late Tuesday night, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa revoked the state of emergency with immediate effect in the island nation that he had declared on 1st April 2022. The President said that he has withdrawn the emergency rule ordinance, which seeks to give the country’s security forces unlimited powers to curb any disturbance. As the island nation is witnessing its worst-ever economic crisis since decades, mass protests are being done by citizens due to the economic hardships they are facing. Meanwhile, the entire cabinet has resigned except the President and Prime Minister. A foreign exchange crisis in the country has led to a shortage of essential commodities, including fuel, water and electricity. However, President Rajapaksa has constantly been defending his government’s action by saying that the current economic crisis is largely driven by the covid-19 pandemic and therefore, not a forex crisis.
