The Padma Awards ceremony is currently taking place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi, wherein the President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, is presenting awards to prominent names from different industries. The Padma award is a highly prestigious honour and also the 4th highest civilian award in the country. Conferred in 3 categories, namely, Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri, the Padma Awards are given to people who have immensely contributed to their industry, including social work, public affairs, trade & industry, education, sports, civil service, literature, science & engineering among others.

This year, the list included many prominent personalities, including Kangana Ranaut, Adnan Sami, PV Sindhu, who were conferred with the prestigious award on Monday. The list consisted of 7 Padma Vibhushan, 10 Padma Bhushan and 102 Padma Shri Awardees, out of which 29 are women awardees, 1 transgender and 16 posthumous awardees.

Among the attendees, the Award ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The list included former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, who were conferred with Padma Vibhushan at the Rashtrapati Bhavan on Monday. The honour was received by their respective family members. Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut, singer Adnan Sami, filmmaker Karan Johar, producer Ekta Kapoor, Television actor Sarita Joshi and badminton player PV Sindhu are some of the eminent names who received the Padma Shri on Monday. The Padma Awards are announced every year on the eve of Republic Day. Noted Hindustani classical singer Pandit Channulal Mishra also received the Padma Vibhushan on Monday.

This is what Kangana Ranaut, Karan Johar and Ekta Kapoor have to say about the honour they have received. Speaking about the same, Kangana said: “I started my journey from a small village in Himachal Pradesh, and for me to be in the same league as these bigwigs we have grown up watching, whether it is Karan’s films or Ekta Kapoor’s serials… We knew these people growing up. And who has not heard Adnan Sami ji’s songs? For a girl like me, to get a Padma Shri alongside them is a matter of pride.”

Reacting to the news, Karan Johar said: “It’s not very often that I am at a loss for words, but this is one such occasion…The Padma Shri. Such an honour to receive one of the civilian awards in the country. Overwhelmed by so many emotions right now. Humbled, elated and also thankful for the opportunity to live my dream every day, to create and to entertain. I know my father would be proud, and I wish he was here to share this moment with me. #blessed.”

Producer Ekta Kapoor said: “Humbled and overwhelmed. My foray into the industry started when I was just 17. I constantly heard I was ‘too young’, ‘too raw’, and it was ‘too soon’ to make things happen. Through the years, I’ve realized it’s never ‘too soon’ to live out your dreams and being ‘too young’ is probably the best thing. Today, as I’m conferred with the 4th highest civilian honour- ‘Padma Shri’, I’m humbled.”
