PM Modi’s Europe Visit: Russia-Ukraine Matter, Energy Security On Agenda

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has begun his first abroad trip in 2022. In the 3-nation visit, PM Modi is set to visit Germany, Denmark and France. India’s official visit to Europe comes amid the ongoing crisis between Russia and Ukraine. As New Delhi continues to do business with Moscow, the Europe visit would be challenging for PM Modi as India has not called out Russia internationally and abstained from voting at the UNSC meets. During the Europe visit, Prime Minister Modi would be focussing on giving a significant push to trade, defence, and energy security ties between India and Europe. Official sources suggest that the Russia-Ukraine matter will also be on PM Modi’s agenda. PM Modi will be holding his first bilateral meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and will be accompanied by the External Affairs Minister, Finance Minister and MoS (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology. As per official sources, defence cooperation and trade would be of major focus during PM Modi’s visit to Denmark and France. During PM Modi’s visit to Europe, the pending India-EU Free Trade Agreement (FTA) would also be taken up, and the negotiations might get re-launched.

In a letter to the Delhi government, Union Power Minister said that the data provided by the Delhi Power Minister was inaccurate. According to R K Singh’s letter, coal stock at the Dadri plant is sufficient for 8.43 days, while coal stock at the Unchahar plant is sufficient for 4.6 days. He also said that coal stocks are being replenished on a day-to-day basis, and the NTPC has been declaring 100% coal availability from Dadri and Unchahar power plants. In his letter, the Union Power Minister added that panic was created by using wrong data, and this was reprehensible. He also added that a similar kind of panic was created among people in October 2021 on the basis that Delhi’s gas-based plants were running out of gas supply which proved to be baseless.
