Presidential Election Results: Counting Of Votes Under Process

The counting of votes for the recently held 15th presidential election started at 11 am today. The counting process is going on in Room No 63 of parliament house. The officials declared this room a sanitized and a “silent zone”. On Monday, i.e., July 18, 2022, parliamentarians and state legislators across the country cast their votes to elect the 15th president of India. As responded by the election commission, “Out of a total of 771 voting entitled MPs (05 vacant) and 4025 entitled MLAs (06 vacant and 02 disqualified), over 99% cast their votes. Meanwhile, 100% voting was recorded from the state assemblies of Chhattisgarh, Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Mizoram, Puducherry, Sikkim, and Tamil Nadu” In the elections, a lot of MPs and MLAs from opposition parties cross-voted in favour of NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu. However, the exact figure of MPs will come out only after the declaration of election results. In India, the Election Commission follows the electoral college pattern for electing India's president. According to this, Indian lawmakers cast their votes on behalf of citizens of India. It is noteworthy that only elected representatives can cast their votes, not the nominated ones. https://twitter.com/SpokespersonECI/status/1549987840510988288

Alt News Co-Founder Mohammad Zubair Released On Bail

On Wednesday, July 20, 2022, Supreme Court granted bail to Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair along with clubbing multiple cases registered against him in several states. Hours after the SC granted bail to Mohammad Zubair, he walked out of the Tihar Jail. The bail offered relief to Mr Zubair, who has been entrapped in a “vicious cycle” of cases registered by the Delhi and Uttar Pradesh police against him. With this ruling, the SC has extended a legal shield to citizens against the state's action of initiating criminal processes in multiple places for the same offence. In their ruling, a Bench of Justices D.Y. Chandrachud, Surya Kant, and A S Bopanna told the UP government, “The existence of the power to arrest must be distinguished from the exercise of the power of arrest. The exercise of the power of arrest must be pursued sparingly”. Although the court did not revoke the FIRs against Mr Zubair, it offered him liberty to approach the Delhi HC to quash cases registered against him because of his tweets. Mohammad Zubair was arrested on June 27, 2022, by the cyber unit of Delhi police on charges of allegedly hurting religious sentiments through his tweets. https://twitter.com/the_hindu/status/1549937234677211138

Ranil Wickremesinghe Took Oath As The New President Of Sri Lanka

In the recently held presidential elections in Sri Lanka, Ranil Wickremesinghe secured a clear majority. After the announcement of election results on Thursday, July 21, 2022, he took oath as the island nation's new president. Meanwhile, the anti-government protesters continued to rally against the Rajapaksa ally. Continuing their protests, protesters gathered outside the presidential residence and chanted “Go back, Ranil”, as they don’t want Ranil to run the government. The economic crisis experienced by the people of Sri Lanka is the outcome of country’s poor policy making and irresponsible decisions taken by the former leadership of the country. Such things instigated the common masses to hold widespread anti-governmental protests across the country. Even after observing the power shifts in the island nation, the Indian High Commission in Colombo stated that “India will continue to support Sri Lankan people's quest for stability and economic recovery through democratic means and values”. Earlier, the former president Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled to the Maldives and then Singapore after protesters entered his official residence. “In Singapore, Mr Rajapaksa has been granted a 14-day short-term visit pass (STVP), cited Singapore immigration officials. https://twitter.com/ndtvfeed/status/1549990310733910017
