Rajasthan: 2 People Kill Kanhaiya Lal Citing Prophet Mohammad Insult; Threatens PM Modi In Video

On Tuesday, 2 men hacked a tailor, identified as Kanhaiya Lal, to death and posted the brutal video on the internet. The 2 men claimed that they killed Kanhaiya Lal in retaliation for the victim sharing and supporting suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma's remarks on Prophet Mohammad. After the gruesome incident, prohibitory orders have been imposed for a month, and internet services have been cut in Rajasthan for 24 hours. Victim Kanhaiya Lal's body was removed from the spot late at night after protestors stalled the authorities demanding strict action and compensation for Kanhaiya Lal's family. Ever since the incident occurred, the internet has been trending with #JusticeforKanhaiyaLal. In another video, the assailants identified themselves as Mohammad Riyaz and Ghouse Mohammad, who boasted about beheading the victim and also issued death threats to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and ex-BJP leader Nupur Sharma. Both residents of Udaipur were arrested immediately by the Rajasthan police. The violent incident has triggered massive protests in the state, with Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot condemning the heinous murder. The Rajasthan CM said that 'strict action will be taken against all the criminals involved in this incident' and that 'the police will go to the bottom of the crime'. Meanwhile, the Union Home Ministry has also sent a team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) to the city to explore any terrorism angle behind the crime. "This murder has been committed for ideological reasons, in the name of religion. The NIA will explore if there is any angle of terrorism and provide whatever assistance is required to the state police," said a senior union government officer. In the video posted online, Kanhaiya Lal can be seen taking measurements of one of the assailants, who later identified himself as Riyaz. Moments later, the man attacks the victim on his neck with a cleaver as the victim asks: "Kya hua? Batao toh sahi (What happened? Tell me)" To probe the incident, an SIT has been constituted with top officers, including ADG (ATS, SOG) Ashok Rathore and IG (ATS) Prafulla Kumar, an SP and an Additional SP. https://twitter.com/HMOIndia/status/1542020613631791104 https://twitter.com/ashokgehlot51/status/1541793933470027776 https://twitter.com/ashokgehlot51/status/1542007582453530624

Mohammad Zubair Arrest: Journalists Should Not Be Jailed Says UN Chief's Spokesperson

After the arrest of Alt News co-founder Mohammad Zubair by the Delhi Police after an alleged derogatory tweet made by him, a spokesperson for UN Chief Antonio Guterres said that journalists should not be jailed for what they write, tweet and say. The spokesperson added that it is essential to allow people to express themselves freely without the threat of any harassment. On Monday, the Delhi Police arrested Mohammad Zubair after another Twitter handle tagged them in a 2018 Tweet made by the handle @zoo_bear. The Twitter handle claimed that the tweet hurt their religious sentiments. "Journalists should not be jailed for what they write, what they tweet and what they say. And that goes for anywhere in the world, including in this room," said spokesperson Stephane Dujarric when asked a question at the daily news briefing regarding Zubair's arrest in India. The UN Human Rights agency has also voiced concerns regarding the arrest and detention of social activist Ms Teesta Setalvad in the 2002 Gujarat Riots case.
