Russia-Ukraine War: Russia Warns Of Humanitarian Catastrophe In Mariupol
On Monday, Ukraine refused to surrender the port city of Mariupol. Upon Ukraine refusing Russian calls, the Russian forces have warned of a humanitarian catastrophe in the city, increasing pressure on European countries to intensify sanctions on Moscow. Russian troops had called Ukrainian forces to lay down their arms in exchange for a safe passage for residents of Mariupol. The Russian forces had said that humanitarian corridors would be opened from 1000 Moscow time (12:30 PM IST). However, Ukraine’s Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said: “There can be no question of any surrender, laying down of arms. We have already informed the Russian side about this.” The Ukrainian government said that over 7,000 people have been evacuated from Ukrainian cities and added that nearly 50 buses would be sent on Monday for further evacuations. The port city of Mariupol has suffered some of the heaviest bombardments since Russia invaded Ukraine.

Covid-Surge: WHO Clears Misinformation Regarding The Omicron Variant
As the world is on the verge of witnessing yet another wave of the covid-19 pandemic with Omicron BA.2 surging, the World Health Organisation said that there are misinformations brewing about the virus that is causing a lot of confusion. The WHO warning came after new infections jumped by 8% globally last week as compared to the previous week. WHO’s Mike Ryan said: “It’s moving around easily, and in the context of waning immunity and vaccines not acting perfectly against infection, the virus will likely continue to echo around the world.” He also added that one could not classify the virus as purely seasonal, and it has not adopted a predictable pattern yet. “It will be high in some parts sometimes and then move and be higher again; it will move to another area where immunity is waning. The virus will pick up pockets of susceptibility, and we will survive on those pockets for months until another pocket opens. This is how viruses work. They establish themselves in a community, and they will move quickly to the next community that’s unprotected.” he further added.
