SC Lashes Out At Nupur Sharma: ‘This Lady is Single-Handedly Responsible For The Happenings’

On Friday, the Supreme Court lashed out at former BJP spokesperson Nupur Sharma for igniting communal tensions with her comments on Islamic religious leader Prophet Mohammad during a heated Television debate. Blaming Nupur Sharma, the Top Court said: “The way she has ignited emotions across the country. This lady is single-handedly responsible for what is happening in the country,”. After the spokesperson (now suspended) made derogatory remarks against Prophet Mohammad, it sparked massive protests across the country, with gulf countries condemning India and summoning Indian Diplomats to issue severe reprimands. “We saw the debate on how she was incited. But the way she said all this and later says she was a lawyer it is shameful. She should apologise to the whole country,” said Justice Surya Kant. Earlier, Nupur Sharma had requested the Court to transfer to Delhi after multiple FIRs were filed against her, citing death threats. However, she later withdrew her petition. “Her comments showed her obstinate and arrogant character,” said the SC. “What if she is the spokesperson of a party. She thinks she has back up of power and can make any statement without respect to the law of the land?” added the Court. When Nupur Sharma’s lawyer referred to the citizens’ right to speak, the Judges said: “In a democracy, everyone has the right to speak. In a democracy, grass has the right to grow, and the donkey has the right to eat,” “She cannot be put on the pedestal of a journalist. When she goes and lambasts on a TV debate and makes irresponsible statements without thinking of the ramifications and consequences that it will have on the fabric of society,” said the Top Court quashing Nupur Sharma’s argument, citing an order about protecting journalistic freedom.

On Thursday, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot met Kanhaiya Lal’s family and assured them of all help. He also said that the case would be probed by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) team and that a charge sheet would be filed soon, and a trial would be done in a fast-track court. “Those who murdered made a video of their own, and thus they themselves have become eyewitnesses,” said CM Ashok Gehlot. The brutal killing of Kanhaiya Lal has shocked the entire nation, with people taking out rallies in the Udaipur city and shouting slogans against the murderers. “I have spoken with the chief minister. He has provided us with financial help too. He has also assured me of a government job,” said Kanhaiya Lal’s elder son, who has also sought police protection for his family. On Tuesday afternoon, two men, later identified as Riaz Akhtari and Ghouse Mohammad, walked into tailor Kanhaiya Lal’s shop. While Lal was taking the measurements of one of the men, both murdered Kanhaiya Lal with sharp knives. They also made a video of the gruesome act and posted it online. In another video, both Riaz and Ghouse boasted about killing Kanhaiya Lal and said that they took revenge from Lal as he had backed the controversial comments made by former BJP leader Nupur Sharma against Islamic religious leader Prophet Mohammad. Meanwhile, Kanhaiya Lal had been getting death threats and had asked the Rajasthan police for protection. When asked the same to Rajasthan CM, he said that it would become clear in the NIA investigation whether there was a state police failure in providing security to Lal.

Maharashtra: Uddhav Thackeray Camp Moves The SC To Restrict Shiv Sena Rebel MLAs In Assembly Proceedings

As Shiv Sena rebel leader Eknath Shinde took oath as the Maharashtra Chief Minister yesterday evening, with the support of the Bhartiya Janata Party, former CM Uddhav Thackeray’s camp has made a fresh move against Eknath Shinde. The Thackeray camp has moved the Supreme Court to restrict the Shiv Sena rebel MLAs who rebelled against the former MVA government from participating in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly proceedings. “The delinquent MLAs who have been acting as pawns of the BJP, thereby committing the constitutional sin of defection, ought not to be allowed to perpetuate their sin even for a single day by permitting them to continue as members of the assembly,” said team Thackeray’s petition to the Apex Court. After Eknath Shinde took oath as the Maharashtra CM, the political battle has now moved to take control of the Shiv Sena party, which was founded by Uddhav Thackeray’s father, Balasaheb Thackeray. “Despite the rebellion carried out by the Eknath Shinde faction, the original Shiv Sena political party remains under the leadership of Uddhav Thackeray…who was elected president of the Shiv Sena way back on 23.01.2018 when the organisational elections of the were conducted, and the same was communicated to the Election Commission on 27.02.2018,” said Thackeray’s petition meaning that only the Election Commission of India has the right to decide who represents Shiv Sena. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has said that it will consider the Maharashtra issue only on July 11. Also, a two-day special session of the Maharashtra Legislature will be held on July 3 and 4.
