“You Have Abused The Indian Invitation”: Israel Envoy To IFFI Jury Chief For Calling The Kashmir Files ‘Vulgar’
On Tuesday, the Ambassador of Israel to India, Naor Gilon, wrote an open letter to Israeli filmmaker Nadav Lapid which he shared on Twitter. In the letter, Naor Gilon accused the Israeli filmmaker of abusing the Indian invitation to chair the panel of judges at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) after Lapid criticised the Vivek Agnihotri-directed The Kashmir Files, calling it vulgar and propaganda. The Israel envoy wrote: “In Indian culture, they say a guest is like God. You have abused in the worst way the Indian invitation to chair the panel of judges at IFFI Goa as well as the trust, respect and warm hospitality they have bestowed on you,” “I’m no film expert, but I do know that it’s insensitive and presumptuous to speak about historic events before deeply studying them, and which are an open wound in India because many of the involved are still around and paying the price,” added Mr Gilon. The Israel envoy further added that the friendship between the people of India and Israel is very strong and will survive the damage that the Israeli filmmaker has inflicted. “You will go back to Israel thinking that you are bold and ‘made a statement’. We, the representatives of Israel, would stay here. You should see our DM boxes following your ‘bravery’ and what implications it may have on the team under my responsibility,” said Naor Gilon. Speaking at the closing ceremony of the 53rd edition of IFFI, Israeli Filmmaker Lapid said: “We were, all of us, disturbed and shocked by the 15th film, The Kashmir Files. That felt to us like a propaganda, vulgar movie, inappropriate for an artistic competitive section of such a prestigious film festival,” Reacting to Lapid’s criticism; filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri shared a cryptic post on Twitter which read: “Truth is the most dangerous thing. It can make people lie. #CreativeConsciousness,” Meanwhile, actor Anupam Kher who featured in The Kashmir Files, wrote on Twitter: “No matter how high the height of the lie is.. It is always small in comparison to the truth,” while attaching pictures from The Kashmir Files and Steven Spielberg’s film Schindler’s List.

An open letter to #NadavLapid following his criticism of #KashmirFiles. It’s not in Hebrew because I wanted our Indian brothers and sisters to be able to understand. It is also relatively long so I’ll give you the bottom line first. YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED. Here’s why: pic.twitter.com/8YpSQGMXIR
