Sanju Samson Fails To Impress; T20 World Cup Chances Hang By A Thread

Team India is preparing for the upcoming T20 World Cup. The players are keen on making an impact and impressing, ahead of the selections for the tournament. The second phase of the IPL 2021 tournament will also have an impact on that decision. There is a lot of quality within the Indian team and they have some amazing backups too, which was seen in the tour of Sri Lanka recently.

The performances in the ODI series were good. However, the pandemic-hit depleted squad could not compete in the T20s after the win in the first match. They eventually suffered a loss and things did not go their way. The series ended up in a 2-1 win for Sri Lanka.

Despite that, amongst the players that did play, there were quite a few disappointing ones. One such player was wicketkeeper Sanju Samson, for whom the chances now in the build-up to the T20 World Cup could be really limited.

Will Sanju Samson Make To The T20 World Cup Squad; Probably Not

Sanju Samson was really poor in the recently concluded Sri Lankan tour. There were some high expectations from him, as the fans wanted him to shine and challenge for the first-team wicketkeeping slot. Keeping that in mind, the player was started as the keeper and was given a task in the T20 matches.

However, he failed to make any sort of major impact in the games that he played. His batting was poor, wicketkeeping a bit better but the overall performances were just not good enough. Knowing that he will have to challenge an in-form Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul for a place in the squad, Sanju Samson has been really disappointing.

His chances of being picked for the T20 World Cup are now rare. The only thing that could possibly help him is if he makes a major impact in the second phase of the IPL 2021 tournament. He is part of a team that needs players to step up. His T20 numbers are really worrying at present. He has just 117 runs in 10 games with a strike rate of 110. That is despite being given opportunities to bat in the top four. Can he do a Rishabh Pant and turn things around? Let’s wait and watch!!
