OTT Platforms: The ‘Baahubali’ of The Indian Entertainment Sector


The OTT streaming industry is witnessing a constant rise worldwide with almost 40 players representing different kinds of content. In this context, according to a report presented by the Boston Consulting Group and CII, the Indian streaming industry is also likely to grow $13 to $15 billion over the next decade. The rate at which subscriptions are multiplying in India, it is making way for a new form of entertainment and that is, Over The Top or OTT platform. The comfort of sitting at home and enjoy the new releases from the entertainment industry have made people a fan, and the ability to choose from a variety of content on one platform adds to the already existing benefits.  The massive rise in the number of subscriptions is also because of the revised price policy that has left no reason for Indian audiences to not subscribe to an OTT channel. The prices at which subscriptions are sold in India are way cheaper than in US, and that’s the major reason for this unmatched popularity.  The graph of Indian OTT subscription inclined sharp from early stage to scaling stage as it offered a whole range of entertaining content at one platform. The Covid-19 protocols left people with nothing to do at home. The major players in India like Netflix, Disney+ Hotstar, Amazon Prime Video, Eros Now, Sony Liv, Alt Balaji, and Zee5 made all possible efforts to leave no age-group untouched. However, mainly people of the younger lot showed more interest in adopting this new platform.  Now, OTT is all set to enter the mass stage, and that is when the OTT industry will start making bigger profits while getting greater adaptability. According to experts, the subscription rates will definitely see a rise once the investors feel that the Indian audience has now completely accepted this medium of entertainment. As, the only reason of cutting down the subscription rates to this low was to make Indian audience aware of the OTT platforms and also honestly, make them addicted to the same.  Besides, various producers, filmmakers, and creative section of the country are also moving towards releasing their content on these platforms to get quicker reach. The makers no more have to request their fans to visit the nearest theaters, as all kind of content can now be enjoyed in the homely comfort.
