What We Know About Tailei Qi, the UNC Chapel Hill Shooter Suspect
Shooting at educational institutes in the United States of America is common. It has been coming for years. And the 28th of August 2023 recorded one more incident that took place in the UNC campus at Chapel Hill. A shooter, Tailei Qi, a PhD student of Applied Physical Sciences, came to the campus of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and gunned down a faculty member. And after one and half an hour, Taipei Qi, the UNC Chapel Hill shooting suspect, was in police custody.
Kevin M Guskiewicz, the Chancellor of the University of North Carolina (UNC), confirmed the shooting death of a faculty member in the campus building. There is no clear disclosure about the identification of the dead faculty member due to police involvement in the identification process. According to the Chancellor, one person was in police custody and there was no accountability of the weapon used in the campus shooting till 6 pm on Monday, 28 August.
The statement released by the Chancellor stated, “This loss is devastating and the shooting damages the trust and safety that we so often take for granted in our campus community. We will work to rebuild that sense of trust and safety within our community”. The Chancellor further stated that classes were canceled for the remaining of Monday and Tuesday and advised students to take benefits of mental health resources at the UNC campus. A tweet from Caroline Blair revealed the situation and the Chancellor message:
Roy Cooper, North Carolina Governor, called the suspect a shooter and wrote in a Twitter post, "I have spoken with Orange County Sheriff Blackwood and Dept. of Public Safety Secretary Buffaloe and pledged all state resources needed to capture the shooter and protect the UNC campus." And the UNC police released the suspect picture and requested people/students inform them about the suspect. The tweet is as follows:
According to the UNC officials, the police took the suspect in their custody at 2:38 pm. They were unable to find any connection between the suspect and the victim. Talking about the timeline of this campus shooting, it is as follows:
• An alert at 1:03 pm ET about the entry of an armed and dangerous man in the UNC campus
• At 2:34 pm ET, the UNC officials and the police requested everyone to be in a shelter
• At 2:38 pm ET, the suspect in the police custody
• And at 4:26 pm ET, there was an end of the lockdown at the university campus
Who is Tailei Qi?
Taipei Qi is a PhD student of Applied Physical Sciences at the University of North Carolina (UNC). He enrolled himself into this university in 2022. He received a master degree in material sciences from Louisiana State University in 2021. In 2015, he did his graduation in physics from Wuhan University. He has no criminal background or connection till the UNC campus shooting on 28 August 2023.
In his LinkedIn profile, he mentions himself as a graduate student at the department of applied physical sciences, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He holds work experience in 2D TMD optical tweezers, photodetectors. Taipei Qi works on the optically trapped nanoparticle arrays with their fascinating phenomena
