Effective Ways to Prepare for Class 7 IMO

International Mathematics Olympiad Class 7 is one of the toughest exams that students face in school. To crack the exam, one must have a firm dedication, a will to work hard, and a strategy to work on. It is nothing like the school exams where one can pass with the minimum amount of effort. Here one must learn things by heart to have a chance to find success. IMO has always been known as an exam that puts a lot of emphasis on the understanding of the fundamentals. There is a reason behind that; for this is an exam of international standard, and it intends to prepare the students for future challenges. If the students have what it takes to crack this exam, and if they keep on harbouring this prospect, it will become much easier for them to achieve their dream. As is mentioned, IMO focuses on the fundamentals, and very few students actually succeed in fulfilling this requirement. Class 7 mathematical problems can be found everywhere, from SSC question papers to University entrance tests. And having a strong grip of the fundamentals at this age will only add to their advantage while facing the bigger challenges later in life. In this article, all the effective ways are mentioned and explained for the aspirants to use, so that they can emerge victorious in this examination. Check the Syllabus: It happens to many students that they think that they know the syllabus inside out; they maintain a positive attitude about their knowledge and confidently prepare for the exam. But in the exam hall, the question paper somehow takes them by surprise, and they are left with no choice but to leave the questions or to attempt and waste their time. And it all happens because they could not gather enough time to check the syllabus properly. This is why one must positively know what she/he will be facing in the exam. To make it much simpler for the students, the names of all the topics are provided below.

  • Section A: Verbal and Non-Verbal Reasoning.
  • Section B: Fraction and Decimals, Integers, Exponents and Powers, Simple Linear Equations, Algebraic Expressions, Lines and Angles, The Triangle and its Properties, Comparing Quantities, Symmetry, Rational Numbers, Congruence of Triangles, Perimeter and Area, Visualising Solid Shapes, Data Handling, and Practical Geometry.
  • Section C: The questions from this section will be made based on the syllabus of Mathematical Reasoning.
  • Section D: Higher-Order Thinking Questions; questions from this section will be made based on the topics of Section B.
These are all the topics that the students are required to study thoroughly; for there will be no questions in IMO Class 7 outside these topics. Know the Question Pattern: Once the students are familiar with the syllabus, they must know what type of questions will come in the exam. There will be a total of 50 questions in the IMO Class 7 exam, and the full marks will be 60. These 50 questions will be divided into one-mark questions and 3 marks questions; while the total number of one-mark questions is 45, only 5 questions of 3 marks are there. If divided further, 15 one-mark questions will be from Logical Reasoning; 20 one-mark questions will be from Mathematical Reasoning, 10 one-mark questions will be from Everyday Mathematics, and 5 three-mark questions will be from Achievers Section.  Choose the Right Books: It is really important, from the examination point of view, to know which books to follow and which ones to ignore. Not all the books are helpful when the target is IMO Class 7, and one’s performance in the exam does not really depend on the number of books she/he followed. So, it is always better to select 1-2 books and practice them thoroughly. In this case, NCERT Class 7 maths and IMO Workbook for Class 7 are recommended to all the aspirants. These books are reliable and provide the students with standard quality materials. They have everything that the IMO Class 7 syllabus stipulates and also provide exercise sets containing various types of questions for the aspirants to practice. Make a Timetable: When the goal is huge, the preparation must also be disciplined. A timetable helps the students to divide the whole syllabus into small parts and makes the whole act of preparation much more efficient. The students will know beforehand when they will cover a topic and how fast they should move on to the other. By following the timetable, the students will progress at a steady pace and will be free of extra stress and anxiety. Practice Regularly: There is no other way to prepare Mathematics for IMO than practising the topics continuously. Going through a chapter thoroughly, picking each and every problem and solving them, and repeating this circle over and over again with all the chapters – that is how the preparation of an exam like IMO Class 7 should be. It might seem a bit rigorous, but the students should remember that what they will learn now will be useful throughout their lives. That is why so much importance is bestowed upon having crystal clear concepts.  Solve Sample Papers: All the aspirants will come to a point during their preparation period when they have taken everything that the books had to offer. But that does not mean that they are ready to sit the exam. For IMO Class 7 question paper is not that predictable, and the students must not take such a risk. When the books are finished, the students have acquired a deep understanding of the fundamentals. But now is the time to execute that understanding by solving various sample papers, starting from IMO Maths Olympiad Class 7 Sample Paper 1. The more they are familiar with various types of questions, the greater is their chance to crack the IMO Class 7 exam. Revise Meticulously: This phase is not only about going through the syllabus all over again, it is mostly about getting rid of all the weak spots and habits of making mistakes. It is about learning the formulae by heart and having the tables at the pick of the tongue. It is about making one’s preparation perfect.
