Is Runway 34 Based On The Controversial Jet Airways Doha-Kochi Flight Incident?

Ajay Devgn just dropped the trailer of his upcoming directorial venture Runway 34, featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Rakul Preet Singh in pivotal roles. The trailer puts the question: Did Ajay Devgn (the pilot) stopped an air crash or caused a severe accident? However, it never answers the dilemma! The film's trailer rightly builds the thrill and keeps you at the edge of your seat.  From what seems from the trailer, Ajay Devgn as Captain Vikrant Khanna is a man full of secrets, Rakul Preet Singh as his co-pilot who is also hiding a lot and an investigating officer played by Amitabh Bachchan who tries to find the truth which is hidden 35,000 feet above the ground. Runway 34 marks the second directorial venture of Ajay Devgn after the 2016 film Shivaay. The trailer opens up with the statement: "Based on true incidents", but what's the story? Has any incident like this taken place in real life? Well, yes!

The Controversial Story of Jet Airways Flight 9W 555

The incident, better known as the Jet-Airways Doha-Kochi Flight incident, took place on August 18, 2015. The incident became the headlines of every media channel because it raised a lot of questions, and you can't really answer them. As per the synopsis and trailer of Runway 34, the film might be inspired by the Jet Airways Doha-Kochi flight incident.  The incident took place when Jet Airways flight 9W 555 arrived from Doha, Qatar, at the Cochin International Airport in Kochi, Kerala, with around 142 passengers and 8 crew members on board. There was not enough visibility for the aircraft to land because of the haze that happened due to heavy rainfall the previous day. The pilot then diverted the plane to Trivandrum (now, Thiruvananthapuram), but the visibility was less than what was required. The flight was also running low on fuel, and when the fuel dropped to alarming levels, the captain decided to land the aircraft, almost blindly. Though the landing was done safely, the captain was demoted to the rank of a co-pilot for risking the lives of the passengers on board.  The incident attracted a lot of mixed responses. Some said that it was a wise decision by the captain, and some said that the incident was one of the gravest of safety incidents ever occurred at any of the Indian airports. In brief, some portrayed the captain as a hero and some as a dangerous person.  Runway 34 is all set to hit the theatres on 29th April 2022.  Watch Runway 34 trailer here: https://youtu.be/0zJ7rfxUv3I
