Hydration: Your Best Friend During Weight Loss

We all have heard that a glass of water before each meal can significantly reduce the feeling of hunger so that we don't end up overeating. Water takes up space in your stomach and initiates a feeling of fullness, and when the stomach senses that it's full, it immediately sends signals to the brain and hence, we stop eating. If you are trying to lose weight, drinking water can help you burn more fat, thereby increasing your metabolism.

What Is Metabolism And What Is The Connection Between Metabolism And Weight Loss?

Our body needs energy to function, and it derives that energy from the food we eat, here metabolism comes into play. In simple terms, metabolism is the process of our body through which it extracts the energy from the food that we consume in our daily lives. From breathing, circulating blood, growing and repairing cells to adjusting hormone levels, our body needs energy even when it is at rest. How many calories your body might use to perform these functions is what is known as your basic metabolic rate or metabolism. You might blame your metabolic rate for all the weight gain, but many other factors, including hormone controls, diet composition, genetic makeup and lifestyle, contribute to weight gain. However, if you want to shed those extra calories, it is very important to have a decent metabolic rate so that your body burns more calories and convert less of them into fat.

How Can Hydration Help Induce Metabolism?

Many researches have shown that people who consume more water burn calories at an accelerated rate compared to those who are not fully hydrated. In fact, a 2003 study done by the students of the University of Utah found out that drinking 500 millilitres of water induces thermogenesis. (the calorie-burning stage of metabolism) The science behind hydration induced metabolism is that drinking water will stimulate thermogenesis (heat production), particularly when it's chilled. As a result, your body will have to expend its stored energy to warm the fluid to body temperature and more the energy expenditure, the more the metabolic rate. Apart from exercising regularly and being on a calorie-deficit diet, you need to consume at least 6-7 litres of water every day. Most of the times, when we are hungry, we are actually just thirsty and drinking a glass of water can help us not hog on that unhealthy packet of chips. Not only does water increases our metabolism, but it also flushes out all the toxins from our bodies. A lot of waste build up in our body can make us feel bloated and tired; proper hydration is the only key to it. Sugary drinks are hard to avoid during the weight loss journey, especially if you have a sweet tooth. While sugary drinks give us an instant rush and energy, there are higher chances that we might end up having the entire bottle as sugar is highly addictive. Well, is there any magic potion that can control it? Of course, yes! Whenever you feel thirsty and feel like having a glass of chilled coke, reach out for water instead!
