Danny Masterson Gets Life Sentence of 30 Years for Two Rapes

On the 7th of September (Thursday), Danny Masterson, an actor of That ‘70s Show, got a life sentence for raping two women two decades ago. As per the sentence, the actor has to spend his life in jail for 30 years. Danny Masterson is a 47-year-old actor and reputed scientologist. He acted in a retro TV comedy show, That ‘70s Show, for 8 seasons until 2006. In a second trial in May, he was found guilty.
George Gascon, a District Attorney, read a statement on Thursday. In the statement, he said, “This has been a long and arduous road for the victims of Mr. Masterson. They not only survived his abuse, they also survived a system that is often not kind to victims."

Danny Masterson, an actor and a member of the Church Scientology, did a TV comedy show that aired from 1998 to 2006. In 2017, an investigation done by the LAPD made him the first accused of sexual misconduct. In the investigation, he was found guilty in raping three women in which one was his girlfriend. In 2020, he was charged for rapes that took place from 2001 to 2003 at his Hollywood Hills home.

As per an interview to Reuters, one of the victims said. "I forgive you. Your sickness is no longer mine to bear." A victim, identified as Jane Doe 2, said to the actor in the court, “I wished I had reported him earlier to the police. You lived your life behind a mask as two people. But the real one sits here. The world is "safer" with Masterson in jail”.

Another victim without revealing her name said, “Since the week I came forward to police I have been terrorized, harassed and had my privacy invaded daily by the cult of Scientology for almost seven years now. But I don't regret it."   

All the victims of the Church Scientoly were silent. It was 2017 when #MeToo movement was at its top height and almost everyone was revealing the hard truth of their lives that they kept secret earlier. In initial days, the actor denied the allegations these women made. After a three-year serious investigation, the LAPD (Los Angeles Police Department made three charges against the actor. Due to a lack of evidence, prosecutors didn’t file charges.  

Jessica Barth, the founder of Voices in Action, was also present in the sentencing event at the court. She publicly accused Harvey Weinstein, Hollywood producer, of abuse. Her organization works to encourage people to come and report their abuse if they have faced it.
