According to the latest data released by the Union Health Ministry, India has reported 46,164 new covid-19 cases, recording a jump after two days. India’s active caseload currently stands at 3,33,725, which constitutes 1.03% of total covid-19 cases. Meanwhile, the country has recorded 34,159 recoveries between Wednesday and Thursday, taking the total number of recoveries to 3,17,88,440. The daily and weekly positivity rate currently stands at 2.58% and 2.02% respectively. As per the Indian Council of Medical Research, India has conducted 51.31 crore covid-19 tests till now. On the vaccination front, India has administered 60.38 crore vaccine doses under the nationwide vaccination drive.

Kerala, Maharashtra Responsible For The Covid-19 Surge In The Country
As India reported a surge in active covid-19 cases, the main contribution came from states including Kerala and Maharashtra. While Kerala’s contribution was 31,445 cases, Maharashtra contributed 5,031 cases in the active covid-19 caseload. On Thursday, Kerala made the single-largest addition; this unrelenting surge worries the administration even though covid-19 cases have considerably declined in other states and union territories. Other states where the covid-19 cases continue to see a hike includes Tamil Nadu (1,573), Andhra Pradesh (1,601), and Karnataka (1,224). On Wednesday, Kerala contributed 70% of the total covid-19 cases registered across the country. A latest report prepared under the National Institute of Disaster Management predicted that India might face the third wave of the covid-19 pandemic anywhere between September and October.
Centre Gives A Go-Ahead To All Nine Judges Recommended By The Top Court Collegium
The central government has approved all nine judges that were recommended by the Supreme Court collegium led by Chief Justice of India N.V. Ramana. The nine names include eight judges and one lawyer from the Supreme Court bar. They are Gujarat Chief Justice Vikram Nath, Telangana Chief Justice Hima Kohli, Justice C.T. Ravikumar, Justice M.M. Sundresh, Karnataka Chief Justice A.S. Oka, Sikkim Chief Justice J.K. Maheshwari, Justice Nagarathna, Justice Bela M. Trivedi, and senior advocate P.S. Narasimha. The Supreme Court collegium, for the first time, recommended three women judges and also signalled on a strong favour on the representation of women in the highest judiciary. The nine judges might be sworn in by early next week. One of the names for CJI, Justice B.V. Nagarathna, might become the first women Chief Justice of India.
BJP MLA Demands Action Against Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray
After Uddhav Thackeray’s remarks on Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, BJP MLA Devyani Farande demanded action against the Maharashtra CM. Referring to the same, the Nashik MLA said: “Uddhav Thackeray had said about Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath that he is not Yogi but Bhogi. He also had said that Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath should be beaten with slippers. This is not appropriate. We hope strict action will be taken against him,” “Today, on behalf of the BJP Nashik, we are filing complaints against the Maharashtra Chief Minister and Saamana editor before the Commissioner of Police,” added Farande. On Wednesday, Shiv Sena slammed Union Minister Narayan Rane for his derogatory remarks against Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
Taliban Agrees To Let Afghans Leave Even After USA’s Deadline
According to Germany’s ambassador to Afghanistan, Markus Potzel, the Taliban has agreed to permit Afghans with proper documents to leave Afghanistan even after the deadline set by United States’ withdrawal, i.e. 31st August 2021. Taking to Twitter, Potzel tweeted: “Director Stanekzai assured me that Afghans with legal documents would continue to have the opportunity to travel on commercial flights after 31 August.” On Tuesday, US President Joe Biden said that they are planning to complete the evacuation process in Afghanistan by 31st August 2021 but also added that the completion of the task also depends on the Taliban’s cooperation and allowing access to the Kabul airport without any disruptions.

Tollywood Actors Including Rakul Preet Singh, Rana Daggubati Summoned By ED In Drugs Case
Tollywood actors including Rana Daggubati, Ravi Teja, Rakul Preet Singh and director Puri Jagannadh have been summoned by the Enforcement Directorate in connection to a drug case. Taking about the same, an ED official said: “Around 12 cases were booked by Telangana Excise and Prohibition department and 11 charge sheets were filled. Mostly drug traffickers, around eight persons were charge-sheeted in the cases then. Most of them are lower-level drug traffickers. We have called excise officials as witnesses. Likewise, till we get evidence, Tollywood celebrities will be considered as witnesses. Their names have figured in the investigation.” However, all 4 Tollywood personalities have only been summoned and not named as accused in the said case.
