Basavaraj Bommai Appointed As The New CM Of Karnataka

After BS Yediyurappa resigned from the post of Karnataka Chief Minister, the BJP has appointed Basavaraj Bommai as the new Chief Minister Of Karnataka. Since Bommai is a Lingayat, the party has reassured the Lingayat community in Karnataka that their interest is safe with the party. The move is a strategic one as the party is fully aware that the community was the one that helped make BJP a dominant force in Karnataka and gave them power in the south. In the 2018 assembly polls, BS Yediyurappa was the new face of BJP, which emerged as the single-largest party, although short of seven points from hitting the majority mark. The Lingayat community constitutes over 20% of the total state population and is mainly settled in north and central Karnataka. There is a possibility that BJP will now rope in leaders from Dalit and vokkaliga communities to appoint deputy CMs. It is to been seen that how will the party accommodate Yediyurappa's younger son Vijayendra who has been playing a pivotal role in the party affairs.  https://youtu.be/bPo20K6KhZ8 https://twitter.com/narendramodi/status/1420265378500935684

Harrapan City Dholavira Declared As UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Harrapan city 'Dholavira' situated in Gujarat was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site on Tuesday, just two days after Telangana's Ramappa Temple received the same recognition. Dholavira dates back to over 4500 years ago and is one of the largest Harrapan sites in India. Reportedly, the city has witnessed all the stages of the Harrapan Culture from around 2900 BC to 1500 BC. Giving recognition to Dholavira, UNESCO noted that the ancient city is one of the most remarkable and well preserved urban settlements in South Asia. The UN agency said: "Discovered in 1968, the site is set apart by its unique characteristics, such as its water management system, multi-layered defensive mechanisms, extensive use of stone in construction and special burial structures," On 25th July, Ramappa Temple also known as the Rudreshwara Temple received the UNESCO World Heritage site tag. The decision was taken during the 44th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Fuzhou, China. India now has 40 World Heritage sites which include 32 cultural, 7 natural and one mixed property. The UNESCO New Delhi Director, Eric Falt, said: "While the Harappan city of Dholavira has borne witness to the entire trajectory of the rise and fall of an early civilization of humankind, the Kakatiya Rudreshwara (Ramappa) Temple stands as an outstanding marvel of the Kakatiyan culture," https://twitter.com/narendramodi/status/1419983768190812170 https://youtu.be/N9wIM0chQIk

IPS Officer Rakesh Asthana Appointed As The New Delhi Police Commissioner

Gujarat cadre IPS officer Rakesh Asthana was appointed as the Delhi Police Commissioner on Tuesday. The 1984-batch IPS officer was going to retire on 31st July. Mr Asthana was serving as Director-General, Border Security Force, who will now join as the Delhi Police Commissioner with immediate effect, as per the Ministry of Home Affairs order. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC), which is headed by Prime Minister Modi cleared Mr Asthana's appointment and approved the inter-cadre deputation from Gujarat to AGMUT cadre. The appointment is quite rare when an IPS officer outside the AGMUT cadre has been appointed as Delhi Police Chief. Mr Rakesh Asthana had served as the Special Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation and Narcotics Control Bureau Chief when Rhea Chakraborty was arrested in the drug case in Mumbai. The main controversy involving Mr Asthana's name was the unsavoury spat in 2018 with the then CBI Director Alok Verma, and both were removed from the central probe agency. However, Mr Asthana was cleared of all changes later.  https://youtu.be/5lncQ3jDeqY

Mamata Banerjee To PM Modi: "Need Court-Monitored Probe In Pegasus Issue"

After Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Banerjee told the reporters that a Supreme Court-monitored probe should be done into the Pegasus issue, which involves opposition leaders, 40 journalists, and two union ministers as potential targets of surveillance using Israeli spyware that is sold to only to governments. The Pegasus issue has virtually blocked the monsoon session of the Parliament as opposition leaders are constantly demanding a probe over the spyware issue. The Bengal CM described the meet as a 'courtesy visit' and said that she discussed the covid-19 situation and supply of vaccines to the state and a proposal to rename Bengal as 'Bangla'. Mr Banerjee is also set to meet Congress President Sonia Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday and Thursday, respectively. This was the first meeting between the Bengal CM and PM Modi after BJP lost the Bengal elections, in which the two clashed quite frequently. The Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has been a key figure when it comes to opposition parit4s joining forces to take on the BJP in the 2024 elections since her landslide victory in the recent Bengal elections proves that she may have the ability to challenge the BJP's might.

Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra Opens About 'Delhi 6' Failure

Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra is one of the most talented filmmakers in Bollywood who has given us movies like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Rang De Basanti. However, his 2009 release Delhi 6, featuring Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor, created a lot of buzz but failed miserably at the box office, and the director received a lot of criticism. Recently, Mehra, in his autobiography The Stranger in the Mirror, opened about his aftermath of the Delhi 6 debacle and said: "The box office debacle, and my own conflict with what ending was appropriate, shook me deeply. Was I capable of producing great cinema consistently? Was Rang De Basanti a fluke? I was going deeper and deeper into a dark hole. Unable to take it anymore, I drowned myself in alcohol. I wanted to drink myself to death — to sleep and never get up. I could see how much pain I was bringing to Bharathi (his wife) and our daughter, Bhairavi, who was now in her pre-teens. My son Vedant was observing, and things were eroding between us. I remained careless and insensitive to the people I loved the most," Although Delhi 6 was a disaster at the box office, it managed to win two National Awards for Best Production Design.
