Headlines: PM Modi Takes Net-Zero Vow For India At COP26 Summit

PM Modi Takes Net-Zero Vow For India At COP26 Summit

While addressing the COP26 summit (2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference) in Glasgow, Prime Minister Narendra Modi surprised his delegates by pledging that India will achieve the target of net-zero emission by 2070. After the disappointing outcome at the G20 meet, PM Modi's bold affirmation injected new life into the climate change talks. Now, for India, the challenge is to curate a strategy and finance to achieve the net-zero target. However, PM Modi also urged rich countries to support developing countries so that they can shift to clean energy, although he did not explicitly say how much India would need from the international community. Speaking at the summit, PM Modi said: "It is India's expectation that the world's developed nations make $1 trillion available as climate finance as soon as possible. Justice would demand that those nations that have not kept their climate commitments should be pressured," The nation of 1.3 billion people needs to focus on climate change issues since extreme weather events like floods, disruption to the monsoon season or heatwaves can have a devastating impact. Apart from India, Nepal and Thailand also pledged for 2045 and 2050 carbon neutrality targets. Though countries like Canada and Australia did pledge for money towards financing, they declined to set new short-term emission targets.  https://twitter.com/narendramodi/status/1455213594577027073
