Supreme Court Gives Nod For NEET-PG Admissions
In a big relief to medical students, the Supreme Court of India cleared the 27% reservation for OBC (Other Backward Classes) and 10% for EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) categories paving the way for the resumption of medical admissions after a four-month delay. After the top court’s decision, over 45,000 junior doctors can join the workforce at a time when the nation is already preparing to fight against the potential third wave of the covid-19 pandemic. The National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (Post-Graduate) or NEET-PG counselling was to begin in October 2021, but it was delayed due to multiple petitions filed in the top court challenging the government’s decision of 27% and 10% reservations for OBCs and EWS categories. The court said: “You must have some demographic or socio-economic data. You can’t just pluck the 8 million figure out of thin air,” However, the government said that changing norms at this time can lead to complications in the admissions and allocation of colleges for NEET students.
