Headlines: Supreme Court To Appoint Expert Committee To Probe Over Pegasus Row

Supreme Court To Appoint Expert Committee To Probe Over Pegasus Row

A Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana pronounced an order regarding the petitions filed by many requesting a probe into the Pegasus matter. The Bench observed that its intention is to set up an expert committee to conduct an investigation over the Pegasus matter. The court said: "We issued notice to the government. We gave ample opportunity to govt to give details of all action taken by it," "Despite repeated chances they gave a limited affidavit that does not give clarity, If they had clarified they would have reduced the burden on us," it added. The court also said that the state does not get a free pass every time national security is compromised, and the court will not be a 'mute spectator'. Observing that the centre vaguely denied all allegations, which is not sufficient, the court said that accusations need to be probed. While appointing an expert committee that will be headed by a retired judge of the Supreme Court, the Top Court said that the nature of allegations are such that it violates the fundamental right of Right To Privacy. The Pegasus spyware developed by the NSO group was allegedly used to spy on many Indian politicians, activists, lawyers and journalists. Though the Union Government has categorically denied using any spyware to conduct surveillance, the NSO group has maintained that they only deal with legitimate governments.  https://youtu.be/JtKdb40wFK0
