Russia-Ukraine Crisis: Joe Biden Announces New Sanctions On Russia

After Russian President Vladimir Putin recognised the independence of two Ukrainian regions - Donetsk and Luhansk and ordered Russian troops to go there. As a retaliatory move, US President Joe Biden announced new sanctions against Russia and termed Putin's action in Eastern Ukraine as the "beginning of Russian Invasion". Speaking over the Russia-Ukraine crisis from the White House, Mr Biden said: "We are implementing full blocking sanctions on two large Russian financial institutions: VEB and their military bank. We are implementing comprehensive sanctions on Russia's sovereign debt. That means we have cut off Russia's government from Western financing. It can no longer raise money from the West and can not trade in its new debt on our markets or European markets either." Reacting sharply to Russian President Vladimir Putin's move, US President Joe Biden said: "Who in the Lord's name does Putin think gives him the right to declare new so-called countries on territory that belongs to his neighbours? We will also impose sanctions on Russia's elites and their family members. They share in the corrupt gains of the Kremlin policies and should share in the pain as well," adding, "We have worked with Germany to ensure that Nord Stream 2 will not ... move forward." Notably, Russia had invaded and annexed the Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea in 2014 in the same manner. Meanwhile, the Russian President said that its troop deployment at the Russia-Ukraine border has been done in response to NATO's steady eastward expansion. https://twitter.com/POTUS/status/1496296393941655553 https://twitter.com/POTUS/status/1496254481931116548 https://twitter.com/POTUS/status/1495911308625125380

India's EAM S. Jaishankar Says Ukraine Crisis Has Its Roots In The Post-Soviet Politics

On Tuesday, India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar commented amid escalating tensions between Russia and Ukraine and Russian President Vladimir Putin's recent action on two Ukrainian regions. In an interactive session at a think-tank in France, EAM S. Jaishankar said: "The situation in Ukraine is the result of a complex chain of circumstances over the last thirty years. Most countries, such as India and France, which is very active, are seeking a diplomatic solution. The real question is: are you mobilised to find a good solution, or are you content with posturing? India can talk with Russia, with other countries, within the UN security council and support initiatives like those of France," When asked to compare the Russia-Ukraine crisis with the China-Taiwan tensions, the EAM said: "Both are products of very complex histories of that particular region. In the case of Ukraine, a lot of it derives from the post-Soviet politics, the expansion of NATO, the dynamics between Russia and Europe, and Russia and the West broadly," "I think, in the case of Taiwan, it is a product of what happened in Chinese history and what happened the way the Cold war and other developments played out in Asia," he added.  https://youtu.be/3yLAIh8Xw80
