What are Diesel Generators, Their Types and How They Work

Power outages interrupt the operation of all the electrical appliances that consume electrical energy to ensure human activity. Backup diesel generators are a great solution for these situations at houses, offices, institutions or manufacturing enterprises. A mini power generator allows you to maintain the continuous process of equipment, including medical equipment and security systems. The use of diesel generators with the automatic start function ensures the preservation of perishable products stored in refrigerators in warehouses and in food stores.

Device and principle of operation

Stationary and mobile diesel power generators consist of two main working mechanisms: electric current generator and internal combustion system. These parts are located on a rigid frame and are interconnected in such a way that the rotor shaft and the crankshaft of the diesel engine are on the same axis. Depending on the type of model and the stamp of the station, the station is equipped with additional elements and working nodes:
  • Control panels of varying complexity;
  • Noise reduction systems;
  • Radiators with fans (for DVS with water type cooling);
  • Batteries, starters and devices for automatic launch;
  • Protective panels from the side rain;
  • Systems for protecting service personnel and other structural elements.
The principle of generator operation is based on the process of transformation of mechanical energy produced by a diesel engine to an electric current. Diesel generators are used in a lot of areas, including the following ones:
  • In cottage towns and country houses;
  • In construction sites;
  • In catering establishments;
  • At gas stations;
  • For commercial businesses;
  • In agriculture sphere;
  • In hospitals and medical centers;
  • In vineries;
  • In mining;
  • And in lots of other spheres.
Unlike gasoline models, diesel power generators turned out to be more reliable. Their effectiveness is higher, and the service life is longer. Besides, diesel generators are easy and cost-effective to maintain, they consume less fuel, and the diesel itself costs less than gasoline. These power generators are characterized with:
  • High efficiency;
  • Less fuel consumption;
  • Resistance to high loads;
  • A large resource reserve;
  • The duration of continuous operation.
All this contributes to the growth of the popularity of diesel generators. The maintenance of diesel generators mainly includes the timely oil replacement and the terminal, also additional control is required for water cooling. When you choose a diesel generator, first of all decide what are your needs. This will be the base to choose the type of alternator, its power and the level of automation. When choosing the power of a diesel generator, consider not only the estimated total load of all electrical devices, but also the type of load: thermal or reactive. For a house, a diesel generator with a power of 3 to 5 kW is the best option, preferably, with a synchronous alternator that provides stable operation of the computer and other electronic devices.
