Earlier in the afternoon, the senior leaders (Congress members), such as KC Venugopal, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, Ashok Gehlot, Randeep Surjewala, Pawan Khera, were detained by the Delhi Police for protesting on streets.  The case against the Gandhi’s was brought by Subramanian Swamy, Bhartiya Janata Party Politician, who had accused Gandhis of misusing party funds for buying a firm that was responsible to publish the now-defunct National Herald Newspaper. However, the Gandhis denied any financial impropriety, promising to cooperate with the investigation process. Let’s get a quick view of the National Herald case summary.

What Was National Herald Case?

The National Herald newspaper was started by the first Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, in 1938. This newspaper was published by AJL (Associated Journals Limited), which was incorporated in 1937, having 5000 other freedom fighters as its shareholders. Besides National Herald, the company also published other two dailies including, Navjeevan in Hindi and Qaumi Awaz in Urdu.  National Herald was conceived by the most influential leaders, and thus, it became synonyms to India’s freedom struggle. As a result, National Herald soon began to be known as the great nationalist newspaper if India.  National Herald was known for its fierce style and Nehru wrote strong-worded columns regularly. This open voice of Indians disrupted Britisher’s peace of mind, and they banned it in 1942. However, three years later the newspaper again started publishing the thoughts of the Indian leaders.

Allegations against Congress Party!

The National Herald case was first brought up by BJP leader Subramaniam Swamy in 2012. He claimed that Gandhis used the party funds to take over AJL and acquire more than 20 billion Indian rupees in property assets. He further alleged that after the National Herald shut down in 2008, AJL owed an accumulated debt of 900 million rupees to Congress.  Consequently, the Congress assigned this debt to Young India Private Limited in 2010, which is a non-profit company created a few months ago for the said purpose. Rahul and Sonia Gandhi hold 38% each of the company’s shares, and are among the board of directors. Whereas, other party leaders like Oscar Fernandes and Motilal Vora, entrepreneur Sam Pitroda, and journalist Suman Dubey hold the remaining 24% of the company, which is why they are also named in this case.  The BJP leader Mr Swamy alleged that Young India acquired complete control over AJL and its real estate, and Gandhis tricked this newly incorporated company to take over the assets worth millions of rupees.  ED is now investigating the case, and the country will have to wait for National Herald case judgement.
