India Issues Notice To Pakistan Over Its Stubbornness On Indus Water Treaty 1960

On January 25th, a day before India celebrated its 74th Republic Day, it issued a notice to Pakistan for modification of the Indus Water Treaty signed in September 1960. Despite India's repeated requests, Pakistan has been stubborn on IWT's implementation, as per sources. The sources added that the notice was conveyed to Pakistan through respective commissioners for Indus waters. The notice was initiated from the Indian side as Pakistan refused to resolve the issue of India's Kishenganga and Ratle Hydro Electric Projects (HEPs) for the last 5 years. The action will persuade Pakistan to enter into intergovernmental negotiations within 90 days to rectify the material breach of the Indus Water Treaty. "India has always been a steadfast supporter and a responsible partner in implementing IWT in letter and spirit. However, Pakistan's actions have adversely impinged on the provisions of IWT and their implementation, and forced India to issue an appropriate notice for modification of IWT," said official sources. Government officials added that despite India's efforts to move on a mutually agreed path, Pakistan refused to discuss issues during the 5 meetings of the Permanent Indus Commission from 2017-2022. The Indus Water Treaty between India and Pakistan was signed in 1960 and set out a mechanism for cooperation and information exchange between both sides regarding the use of several rivers, including Ravi, Beas, Sutlej, Indus, Chenab and Jhelum. While India has about 20% of the total water carried by the Indus system, Pakistan has 80%. The Indus Water Treaty of 1960 is considered one of the most successful water-sharing treaties in the world, even today.  https://youtu.be/mKhgttT2E_g

Pariksha Pe Charcha: PM Modi Urges Parents Not to Pressurize their Children

During the annual Pariksha Pe Charcha event, Prime Minister Narendra Modi interacted with parents, students and teachers. During his interaction, PM Modi advised parents not to pressurize children over marks. He said: "I urge the parents not to pressurize their children. But at the same time, students should also not underestimate their capabilities. It is very natural for family members to have a lot of expectations, and there is nothing wrong with that, but if the family members are having these expectations due to social status, then it is a matter of concern," The Pariksha Pe Charcha event was held at the Talkatora Indoor Stadium in New Delhi. When one of the students asked: "What is more important? Smart work or hard work?" PM Modi quipped: "Some people hardly work smart, and some people smartly work hard," The Prime Minister further guided students on how to differentiate between hard work and smart work by citing the famous 'Thirsty Crow' story. A few students asked PM Modi how he deals with criticism, to which PM Modi had a witty response: "This is an out of syllabus question," However, he also added that in a democracy, "criticism is like purification,"  https://twitter.com/narendramodi/status/1618846254452334600

India-China Border Clashes: We are closely monitoring the situation, Says United States

On Thursday, the United States said that it is closely monitoring the situation regarding the India-China border clashes. US State Department Principal Deputy Spokesperson Vedant Patel said: "We are closely monitoring the situation broadly regarding border clashes, but we are glad to hear that at least in December, both sides (India and China) appeared to have disengaged," Adding further, Mr Patel also said that India is an important ally of the US in a number of areas including trade cooperation, technological cooperation and security cooperation. Notably, the India-China clash in Ladakh in 2020 has remained a dominant issue between the two. However, India has always maintained that the bilateral ties between both sides cannot be normal unless the border situation is resolved. It has also said that if China disturbs the tranquillity and peace in border areas, it will further impact the relations.  https://youtu.be/qyLBhXhGuj8
