On Thursday, Uttar Pradesh minister Upendra Tiwari made a statement over fuel price hikes in the country. Defending the central government, the UP minister said: “Today, there are just a handful of people who travel in four-wheel vehicles and use petrol. At present, 95 per cent of people don’t need petrol,” The Minister gave the statement to reporters in Jalaun. Commenting at a time when the petrol price has crossed the Rs 100 per litre mark in most of the states and diesel is nearing the mark, Mr Tiwari received a lot of criticism for his comment on the fuel price hike. The minister also pointed out that the per capita income of people have also risen compared to 2014 when the Modi government came in power. Mr Tiwari said: “You see the data before 2014. What is the per capita income after the formation of the Modi and the Yogi governments? Today, the per capita income is double,” Meanwhile, the minister claimed that opposition parties do not have any ‘real issue’ to attack the BJP led central government. At a time when India has achieved the milestone of 100 crore vaccination, the rising fuel prices remain a big issue that needs to be addressed.

When asked if the US will defend Taiwan, the US president said: “Yes, We have a commitment to that,” Biden’s direct statement did not match with the long-held US policy ‘strategic ambiguity’ which states that the US will help in building Taiwan’s defenses but not explicitly promise to defend them in case of an attack.
