Pegasus Row: Top Court To Set Up A Committee To Conduct Probe
On Thursday, the Supreme Court said that an SC-appointed committee would be set up to study the allegations of illegal surveillance done by using the Israeli spyware Pegasus. The move by the Top Court, in this case, is extremely vital as a probe conducted under an SC-appointed committee is more credible than one done by a government panel as the stakes, in this case, involves the right to privacy of citizens, due process and the integrity of institutions. The Pegasus Project was reported in India by The Wire, which revealed that NSO-made spyware Pegasus had been used to snoop on journalists, politicians, activists etc. Though the government told Parliament that they have not interacted with the NSO group, the NSO, on the other hand, said that they only deal with sovereign governments. The Supreme Court is expected to issue orders by next week.
