Covid Bulletin: Highest One-Day Deaths Recorded; Active Cases Continue To Decline

While the nation’s recovery rate has improved to 86.23%, India recorded the highest one-day deaths, with 4,529 fatalities reported in the last 24 hours. According to the data released by Union Health Ministry, the active covid-19 cases continue to decline with 2,67,334 new infections. India’s covid-19 tally crossed the grim milestone of 2 crores on 4th May.

Lockdown Imposed In Odisha Till 1st June; Health Services To Remain Operational

As Odisha is fighting the covid-19 pandemic, the state government has extended the lockdown for two more weeks. The state will remain in lockdown from 19th May till 1st June (5 am). Apart from this, a strict weekend lockdown will be observed from every Friday (6 pm) till Monday (5 am). Amid the lockdown, people can buy essentials from 6 am – 11 am, restaurants can only operate home-delivery and takeaway services, Inter-state and Intra-state bus services will remain inoperative till 1st June. However, all health-related services will continue to function.

Cyclone Tauktae: States Likely To Experience Moderate Rainfall As Tauktae Continues To Weaken

On Wednesday, the Indian Meteorological Department said that Tauktae is weakening into a depression and is centered over south Rajasthan and the adjoining Gujarat region. After causing havoc in Gujarat and Maharashtra, Tauktae is expected to bring moderate rainfall in other states, including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan.

VK Paul, member (health), Niti Aayog, said that some states are seeing the stability of the covid-19 curve, which proves their efforts at testing, restrictions, and containment. States including Maharashtra, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Telengana, Bihar, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan are witnessing a dip in active covid-19 cases, added Paul. However, he also said that some states are showing a trajectory and continue to be a matter of concern, such as Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha.

A Study Founds AstraZeneca And Pfizer’s Combination Very Effective

A Spanish study has found that mixing covid-19 vaccines can prove to be more effective and safe. The Combivacs study conducted by Carlos III Health Institute, a state-backed institution in Spain, found that the antibodies in the bloodstream were 30-40 times higher in people who were given AstraZeneca dose followed by a Pfizer shot compared to those who only received a dose of AstraZeneca vaccine. Only 1.7% of participants of the study reported side effects such as muscle pain, general malaise and headaches.
