US House Speaker Met Taiwan’s President, Said US Always Stands With Taipei

On Wednesday, US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen and reiterated America’s support for the island nation. She cited that the US’s determination to preserve Taiwan’s sovereignty is ‘iron-clad’.

During her meeting with Taiwan’s president, Nancy cited, “America has a bedrock promise to support the independence and sovereignty of Taiwan. On this strong foundation, we established a thriving partnership that supports the self-government and self-determination of the island nation. Our consideration of prosperity primarily focuses on the mutual security and economic growth in all parts of the world“.

Hours after the US House Speaker meeting with Taiwan’s president, China summoned the American envoy in Beijing to lodge a stern protest. Beijing warned that Washington would “pay the price” for “its mistakes” and asked the US to stop using the Taiwan issue to contain China.

US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is the highest-ranking American official who visited the island nation for the first time in 25 years. In response to her visit, China announced a military manoeuvre to retaliate because it considers the US has violated the One-China principle.

Centre Slashed Jet Fuel Price By Steep 12% And Commercial LPG Rate By Rs 36

The central government on Monday decided to cut jet fuel prices by 12% and Rs 36 for a 19-kg commercial cylinder. However, no changes were made to the price of a domestic cooking gas cylinder or regular petrol prices. In addition to jet fuel and commercial cylinder prices, the government has decided to reduce the cess on the export of diesel from Rs 11 to Rs 5 a litre.

Andhra Gas Leak Incident: 53 People Admitted To Hospitals For Treatment

On Tuesday, August 02, 2022, a poisonous gas leak occurred in a company in the Brandix area of Andhra Pradesh’s Atchutapuram area. Following the gas leak incident, a total of 53 people were taken to the hospital for treatment. 

At present, 53 people are admitted here. All have been examined, and their condition is stable, as they got treatment at the right time“, stated Hemanth, District Medical and Health Officer, Anakapalle.

Commonwealth Games 2022: India Bagged Two Gold And Two Silver Medals On Day 5 

The Indian contingent on Tuesday grabbed two gold medals and two silver medals in the ongoing Commonwealth Games 2022. Among the winners, the Indian lawn bowls team created history by winning the first-ever gold in the said event. The Indian team defeated South Africa in a 17-10 event. Similarly, in the men’s table tennis event, Harmeet Desai defeated Singapore’s Zhe Yu Clarence Chew in the 11-8, 11-5, and 11-6 matches.

In the mixed badminton team event, India had to compromise with the Silver medal as the Malaysian team defeated India in a 3-1 event. Also, in the men’s 96 kg weightlifting event, Vikas Thakur succeeds in winning a silver medal. 

With Tuesday’s medal victory, India’s medal tally has reached the 13-medal mark.

Heavy Rain Caused Havoc In South Indian States

The resurgent monsoon caused widespread havoc in southern states of the country, including Kerala, Karnataka, and others. As of now, around 20 people have lost their lives in these states. Also, the heavy downpour triggered landslips in many parts disrupting people’s movement in these states.

Monkeypox Virus: Two More Cases Confirmed In India

Replying to MPs on Tuesday, Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandviya responded that India has eight confirmed cases of monkeypox so far. Looking to the rising number of cases, the country has initiated strict surveillance and contact tracking.  

The minister said, “The disease is not new, and people do not have to panic about it“. 

Mr Mandaviya added, “India is following a step-by-step approach and implementing the best methods to prevent the spread of the disease. So, countrymen do not have to panic about the disease. Instead, they should follow the best hygiene practice and avoid unnecessary gatherings“. 

Covid-Bulletin: India Registers 17,135 New Cases, Recovery Rate At 98.49%

According to the latest data from the union health ministry, India has recorded 17,135 new covid-19 cases in the last 24 hours. The active cases in the country currently stand at 1,37,057. Meanwhile, the nation has registered 19,823 recoveries in the previous 24 hours, and the total recoveries have reached 4,34,03,610. The daily and weekly positivity rates currently stand at 3.69 % and 4.67 %, respectively. As per the Indian Council of Medical Research, the country has conducted 87.63 crore Covid-19 tests so far. On the vaccination front, India has administered 204.84 crore Covid-19 vaccine doses under the nationwide vaccination drive, out of which 93.36 crore and 9.47 crore are second doses and precautionary doses, respectively.
